What is the hole at the top of a ipod touch cover for?

I have a first generation ipod touch and wanted to buy a cover for it. After searching, I found 2nd generation ones. Will that fit my ipod? Also, I want to know what is the little hole for at the upper side (top of the frontside) for. Is it just decoration or is there a use?

The first generation is quite different from the second and third generations. You'll need to get a case that's made for first generation because the others won't be thick enough and the openings are in different places. I don't know what that hole is because mine is newer.
