Apartment Hvac maintenance technician?
I am dealing with a stuck compressor. Before I replace it, I would like to reverse the operation of it. I was reading in one of my books that I could swap the start and run wires and let it run for 3 seconds then swap wires back to original position.
Silly idea. That won't do anything and it won't reverse the compressor.
When a compressor goes to start BOTH the main and the start are energized and once it starts and the power draw falls then the start windings drop out.
If you reversed the wires you have the same condition. Both windings are energized at first. But if it did start then the main would drop out instead of the start. You would be trying to run on the start windings only. It would likely stop and you would be pulling full power through the start windings with a locked rotor condition and probably burn up the start windings if the overload didn't trip fast enough.
Not a good idea. Where did you get that idea?
