BBQ Grills and How to Buy Them
After a long day at the lake, sun-tired and tan, there's nothing better than a meal hot off the grill. Be it steak, chicken, vegetables, potatoes, fish, corn or most anything else, it is just always better cooked on a grill.
Now, my dad is something of a grill-master. He travels a lot for work, and when I was growing up, the second most exciting thing about him coming home (next to him being home, of course) was that we were guaranteed at least three meals a week from the gril. I would always beg for steak with a side of grilled asparagus. Well, after I got a little older and actually started to like asparagus, that is.
Naturally, I became well-acquainted with the importance of having a good grill. You can't be having flare-ups every time you turn your head, and you've got to be able to keep an even temperature. I'm going to impart to you some of the wisdom I've gained. Why? Because I think everyone deserves a good bbq meal.
When you first start looking at BBQ grills, it can be incredibly overwhelming. There are charcoal grills, there are gas grills, there are side burners, there are smokers, there are rotisserie burners- it's enough to make you run to a restaurant every night! I promise, though, if you'll stick it out with me for a few minutes, it will all get cleared up and you can enjoy amazing, home-cooked meals every night if you like.
First of all, and I hate to say this, but you are going to get what you pay for in this department. Don't think you're going to get the same performance from a $100 grill as from a $4,000 grill. Not to say you can't cook a mean burger on a $100 grill because, believe me, you can.
I'm going to stick with gas grills in this article; they're my personal preference because of the pure ease of use-- you just turn on the switch and throw on a piece of chicken or some steaks and cook away. Plus they don't produce flare-ups so they're safer in small areas. Also, gas grills are usually more expensive up front, but each time you use it you'll spend about 25 cents on gas, compared to $5- $7 in charcoal.
Many gas grills come configured for either natural gas or propane. This choice doesn't really affect your grill or cooking, it's just what will be most convenient for you. A natural gas grill requires a gas line, while propane grills mean making sure you have propane whenever you want to have a cook-out.
Now it's time to choose your material of your grill; there are a lot of options, but the only two you really need to look at are stainless steel and aluminum. Watch out for parts that are just painted steel and not stainless. That wasn't too hard, was it?
Also a simple decision is what size grill you want. What are you going to cook? A couple steaks? Hamburgers for the whole neighborhood? The more food, the bigger the grill. Of course, I would never want to get caught saying I'll cook a bunch of food for a block party and then realize it will take me five hours because my grill is so small, but if you're 100% certain that would never happen, I'd say go ahead and get the smaller one. And, obviously, know what space you're going to put it in ahead of time so you don't get your new grill home and realize it doesn't fit.
Pretty simple, right? One last thing, and then I'm going to get to some great tips for when you've got your grill. BBQ grills come with all kinds of add-ons and features. I'm a big fan of the bun-warmer and side burners, but just take a minute and think about what you will use. There's no point in buying extra features you're never going to use.
Okay, you've done all the work in getting your grill. Now it's time to enjoy it! Your food will turn out even better if you follow these simple tips.
1. Keep the lava rocks in your gas grill clean (instructions will come with your grill), and rearrange them every once in a while so heating is more even.
2. After you finish cooking, turn your burner up to high for five minutes and it will burn off excess grease.
3. Buy a hinged grill basket! It will save delicate foods like fish, fruit (try pineapple!) and vegetables. You won't regret it, I promise.
We've covered the basics of BBQ grills, and now it's on you- have fun and try new things!
